Sure, we all enjoy having a soda, and we’ve definitely been told it’s not the best choice… but did you know that reversing the damage from just one can of soda might take you ALL DAY?
Yup, some scientists have proven that we need to walk at least 12,000 steps a day in order to battle some of the not-so-great effects of drinking soda, like an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes and raising your cholesterol. That’s 6 miles a day!
Here’s what they found: walking 12,000 steps a day seemed to counteract the negative effects I mentioned above, like the change in cholesterol. Their blood sugar levels also remained pretty stable, effectively lowering the chances of getting Type II diabetes from too much sugar consumption.
I know, I know, we all have our lazy days and 6 miles seems so unappealing. (See cat above.) But getting in 12,000 steps isn’t that hard. There are tons of things to make it more fun… try out this cool Fitbit or a nifty iPhone app like Pacer!
You can even just make a few changes to your daily routine and you’re all set! Here are a few ideas to get you going:
Take small walking breaks throughout the work day or between your movie marathons–it doesn’t have to be long, and it can also help you relax and clear your mind for a bit.
Park a little farther from the store than you normally would–no need to battle it out for the closest parking spot
Skip the elevator or escalator and take the stairs instead
Spend some quality time with your pet and go out for a walk. It’s healthy for both of you!
